Bishop Diego’s girls basketball team played a pair of games on Monday, finding better results against Santa Maria than Nordhoff at the Village Christian Tournament.
The Cardinals took care of the Saints 52-38 before falling to Nordhoff 53-45.
Essence Thornhill recorded a season-high 12 points to lead the Cardinals in their win, becoming the fifth different player to lead the Cardinals in scoring this season. Thornhill collected four steals along the way.
Janelle Kohler added 11 points, 12 rebounds and Courtney Houston snatched six steals and shared five assists.
The Cardinals (7-5) hurt themselves against Nordhoff, missing on 12-of-13 free-throw attempts.
The Rangers jumped out to a 14-2 lead but the Cardinals clawed back to within two points by halftime.
“The inability to make our free throws kept us from getting the lead,” blamed Bishop head coach Jeff Burich. “I was just happy that we were still there.”
Kohler shook off foul trouble against the Rangers to lead the Cardinals with 12 points and added six rebounds. Kelsey Stimson hauled in 13 rebounds with eight points and Alison Breuer stepped up with 10 points.
