Cardinals let guard down for five minutes in opener

Bishop Diego opened up its season at the Grace Brethren Tournament on Wednesday against last year’s CIF Div. VII Finalist Vasquez, falling 2-0.

“I saw a lot of positive today for our season opener,” said Cardinals head coach Brent Gonsalves, who thought his girls played an even match except for a five-minute stretch to start the second half in which Vasquez scored its two goals. “It should have been a 0-0 tie.”

Gonsalves praised the contributions of Paige Sleep on defense, Natalie Durche in the midfield and freshman Jordan Price as an attacker.

The Cardinals play again in the Grace Brethren Tournament on Thursday against Channel Islands.
