Cardinals find way to brighten rainy day

For a team averaging five goals a game, Saturday’s zero goals must have felt like withdrawl for Cate’s boys soccer team.

Bishop Diego definitely felt much better after a 2-0 non-league win on the Rams’ wet field.

“Truth be said, the score could have gone either way,” said Cardinals head coach Jesus Landeros.

The game matched up two undefeated teams, with Bishop now 3-0-1 and Cate 3-1-0.

Justin Brosnan scored first, giving the Cardinals a 1-0 halftime lead. Michael Mirando added to Bishop’s lead with a goal soon after the second half began.

“That gave us momentum and we were able to stay with that for the rest of the game,” Landeros said of Brosnan’s first-strike.

The sometimes heavy rain affected play, causing some unpredictable bounces and unsure footing.

“We slid around a bit and the ball was skipping but we played through it,” said Brosnan, a freshman.

Cate head coach Dave Mochel believed his team’s offensive struggles were more a result of Bishop’s physical defense than the muddy field.

“To Bishop’s credit, I think their goalkeeper had a great game and their backfield gobbled everything up,” Mochel said. “This is probably the stingiest defense we’ve run up against.”

The Cardinals take that defense to Laguna Blanca on Monday while the Rams host Kilpatrick – a team the Cardinals just beat 4-1 – on Wednesday.
