The Owls played the Warriors tough in the first half, connecting on four 3-point shot attempts to make the score 24-20 at the halfway point. Laguna Blanca had eight different players score during the first 16 minutes of the game.

“Our goal in the second half was to cut down on their 3s,” said Warriors head coach Dan Mercer.

It was a different story in the third quarter as the Warriors went on a 17-2 run to start the half. Burch and Caitlin Wallace combined for 15 of Carpinteria’s 17 points in the quarter.

“I think we had first game jitters,” Burch said of the slow start. “At halftime we talked about what we needed to work on.”

Wallace added a team-high nine rebounds to her 10 points.

“It was a good first effort. Now we know what we need to work on,” said Burch.
