Bishop mounts second-half comeback to beat Saints

Bishop Diego’s boys soccer team rallied back from a 1-0 halftime deficit on Friday to defeat Santa Clara 2-1.

Coach Jesus Landeros said that the Cardinals (1-0-1) failed to convert on numerous opportunities in the first half, while Santa Clara was able to put one away in the 25th minute. Freshman forward Justin Brosnan was taken down in the box 15 minutes into the second half, resulting in a Bishop Diego direct kick which fellow freshman Luis Ortiz tucked in the low corner for the equalizer.

With three forwards up on the attack, Bishop was able to get the game-winner 17 minutes later, as Julian Cassano placed a ball over Santa Clara’s keeper to Brosnan, who finished it off after a diagonal run into the box.

Landeros highlighted the play of seniors Paul Ortega and Ryan Landeros as well as Brosnan and Luis Ortiz.

Bishop hosts St. Bonaventure on Monday.
