Bishop Diego’s first girls soccer win of the season was a 15-1 blowout over Holy Family in the Grace Brethren Tournament on Saturday. After that, the Cardinals had a tight game, defeating L.A. Baptist 2-1.
“Including a scrimmage against Laguna, we played five games this week and you could see the natural progression. It was a very good way to start our first week,” said coach Brent Gonsalves.
Candace Melgoza and Allison Carr had hat tricks in the opener while Jordan Price, Amanda Garcia and Natalie Durtche each put away a pair.
“Obviously they were overmatched. We scored in the first minute and could tell. We did everything possible to slow it down but it still didn’t help,” said Gonsalves.
Melgoza and Durtche scored both first-half goals in a heated contest against L.A. Baptist, and Gonsalves said that the Cardinals moved the ball well in the match. He also highlighted the play of midfielder Isabel Jimenez and defender Brooke Gignac.
The Cardinals (2-2) host Fillmore on Tuesday afternoon. The game might be moved to Girsh Park due to the weather.
