Cardinals win game in budding rivalry

This might go down as one of Bishop Diego’s most satisfying girls basketball wins this entire season, no matter how many victories the Cardinals end up getting.

A steadily growing rivalry with La Reina tilted in Bishop’s favor at the Brickhouse on Friday, 48-35, in the Bishop Diego/Laguna Blanca Tournament.

After the Regents pulled out a heated and contentious 48-40 victory in the Fillmore Tournament last week, the Cardinals led wire-to-wire in a much-anticipated rematch.

“This is one we had marked down on the calendar, and to be able to come through is really exciting. I’m really happy for our girls,” said coach Jeff Burich.

La Reina features significant size in the post with 6-footer Mary Kate Jankowski and 6-foot-3 Julia Violano, but Bishop post players Janelle Kohler and Kelsey Stimson were up for the challenge and came up big, particularly on the offensive glass. Each finished with 13 points, while Stimson had 16 boards and Kohler added 12. Jankowski and Violano combined for 19 points on the night.

In an example of just how much these teams hate losing to each other, the Regents continued to intentionally foul despite being down 13 points in the final minute. Three La Reina players fouled out, and Stimson did for the Cardinals.

“I like it when a game is emotional like that. It makes it more exciting. I just like the drama, I guess,” said Stimson.

Bishop guard Courtney Houston ended up with nine big steals in the game. Captain Ariel Perez stole the ball on La Reina’s first two possessions and Houston notched her first on the Regents’ very next time down. The Cardinals had five steals in the first quarter and pulled down a hefty amount of offensive boards, taking a 16-11 lead into the second quarter that held up for a 20-16 lead at the half.

Despite a La Reina fan yelling that the game was “rigged,” each team had six fouls at the half. Things would heat up in the final two quarters, however, with the Regents ending up with 19 fouls and the Cardinals winding up at 17.

A Kohler steal and subsequent trey by Greer Shull put Bishop up 19-11 to start the third quarter. Later in the quarter, Stimson pulled down offensive rebounds on two straight possessions, the first leading to a lay-up by Kohler and the second being kept for a lay-up by Stimson. The junior then drove baseline and dished a pretty pass to Allison Breuer for a bank shot with 30 seconds left, and the Cardinals had a 32-19 lead heading into the fourth.

La Reina (4-3) dwindled the Bishop lead down to eight on a long-ball by Taylor Cobleigh with just over three minutes remaining, but the Cardinals managed to hang on.

“After the first game at the Fillmore Tournament I think a lot of emotions popped up,” said Regents coach Keith Case. “They certainly did a heck of a job on the boards… All the credit to them, they played great.”

The Cardinals (5-2) take on Villanova in the championship game tomorrow afternoon.

Why don't you write for a rag and follow Britney? Seems like a better fit.

Since when do fans have a single thing to do with a game?

Reporting on fans?? Slow news day?

How did you miss hearing one of your guards telling our post player she wished she got Downs Syndrome??? The selections of their use of “F” words were equally impressive. Selective hearing pal and neither had anything to do with the game (other than deplorable taste with the Downs comments). Why not report on that?

The game is basketball, not rugby. There should have been 60 fouls called for rough play. It was out of control and kids are not there to get hurt.

You neglected to say three La Reina players got hurt…and the tallest/best three players were coincidentlally fouled out (15 of 19 fouls on 3 of the biggest girls on the team?????).

Never saw this trashy site, but someone forwarded it so we put it up on the BS board for an example of stupidity and poor grade school writing. I hope you intend to drive a truck for a vocation.

A college scout in attendance and said it was one of the worst officiated games she had seen. Don't need a fan to call out the obvious.

Nuff said about a bad writer/observer.

Only read the part were you were an asshole with the comment.

Like shooting fish in a barrell with the reply.

    What did you play flute?

Look, I think you're absolutely right — if I had to do it over again I wouldn't mention the fan in the story at all.

I guess I was just shocked a little bit by the things the fan was yelling and the manner in which he was doing it. The others in the stands seemed equally surprised… But that shouldn't have been in the story.

I couldn't hear what was being said between the players on the court, and as far as rough play, I'd say it went both ways.

To me that implies that you think the game was rigged in some way. If you think that the referees are being biased for any reason, I suggest you bring it up with the La Reina Athletic Director and file a formal complaint to CIF immediately the next time. The fact that the teams ended up with the same number of fouls in the first half tells me it couldn't have been as bad as you make it out to be.

I didn't understand the fouling in the final minute with a 13-point deficit, and I felt it was appropriate to mention that as part of the game. La Reina is a very talented and well-rounded team, and they've had the success to prove it.

Once again, I regret mentioning the fan in the story. I hope that you don't find our site trashy as a whole. I take all comments seriously and will know better next time.

And I can't drive stick, so my dreams of a career in truck-driving are on hold for now :)

I am a player on the Bishop varsity team and I have some things I would like to mention here.

First of all, you complained that members on our team made a comment about one of your players having Downs Syndrome. I agree that that was a little uncalled for but on the other hand, she made even worse comments to almost every girl on my team. Some examples of topics she mentioned are one girl's braces, another girl's acne, another girl's weight, she said to me “shut up and get a nose job, bitch” and she even went so far as to say that one of the black girls on our team had “nappy African hair.” Not only are these comments disgusting and rude, but they are also completely irrelevant to anything going on during the game. I don't know about her, but I signed up for basketball, not a trash talking contest. On top of all that, she (and several others on La Reina) used the “F word” and the “S word” almost constantly so it was not just our team!

And as for the physical aspect of the game, you wrote “It was out of control and kids are not there to get hurt.” EXACTLY!! You are absolutely right in this statement but it went both ways! Your “best player” intentionly fouled out with 54 seconds left in the game (our team watched the film from the game a few days ago so I know for a fact that's the exact time when it happened) on a borderline flagrant foul.

La Reina players have a reputation among players throughout the county (I know girls on a handful of teams) for trash talking and committing out of control fouls. It is not just our team's point of view.

We are a bunch of teenagers playing basketball. Comments and words like the ones that were said are going to be exchanged especially during a heated rivalry game like this one. Please don't try to blame everything on us when we were just retaliating to the way they were acting.
