Bashore Classic: Warriors can’t shoot with Flashes in eyes

To say the least, Carpinteria has had a tough time against Fillmore in two meetings so far this boys basketball season.

The Warriors shot an abysmal 15-for-58 in Friday’s 54-41 loss to the Flashes on the first day of the Jim Bashore Holiday Cage Classic. Earlier in the year, Carpinteria shot 16-for-58 in the same matchup.

It doesn’t take a mathematician to figure out how poor the Warriors’ shooting has been against Fillmore, but Coach John Ward pointed it out anyway: 31-for-116, or 26.7%.

Community West BankCarpinteria was outscored 18-2 in the first quarter before battling back to trail 23-20 at the break. The wheels came off again in the fourth quarter, however, which Fillmore won 15-6.

“We need to toughen up,” said Ward. “We can’t shoot the ball very well, and every team has zoned us because they know we can’t step up and hit open shots.”

Carpinteria also went just 8-for-21 from the free-throw line. The tournament hosts will get a chance to heat up against Santa Ynez on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
