SBCC fell behind 2-0 at halftime of a first-round Southern Cal Regional men’s soccer game on Saturday night at Canyons and never recovered in a 2-1 loss that ended the Vaqueros’ season.
The Cougars (13-6-2) scored early and then went up 2-0 on an own goal by the Vaqueros (9-7-5). SBCC won its second straight Western State Conference title but was seeded ninth (one spot behind Canyons) in the power-point rankings and had to play on the road in Santa Clarita at the WSC runner-up.
Danny Molineaux scored his eighth goal in the 50th minute to pull the Vaqueros within one. They had several chances to tie it but couldn’t find the net.
“We came out flat-footed and didn’t perform well in the first half,” said coach John Sisterson. “We gave them a good talking-to at halftime and we came out a different team in the second half. It was all one-way traffic. The first-half performance really cost us.
“We were a very young team with 10 freshmen starters in the latter part of the year. I’m delighted with how the boys did this season after a slow start (0-5-1).”
