Lucky Teeguarden tossed in 20 points and David Lane added 18 for SBCC on Friday but it wasn’t enough to prevent an 82-75 season-opening men’s basketball loss to Miramar at the Glendale Tournament.
The Jets, the defending Pacific Coast Conference champions, jumped out to a 22-6 lead in a game of streaks. The Vaqueros responded with a 24-8 burst to tie it at 30. Then SBCC put together a 15-3 run to end the half with a 45-33 advantage.
The Vaqueros were up 53-38 with 16:30 to play when Miramar, of San Diego, reeled off 15 straight points to tie it. The game was still tied at 73 with 1:30 remaining before the Jets closed things out with a 9-2 spurt. SBCC shot just 29 percent (9-31) in the second half
Teeguarden hit 4-of-7 from 3-point land. Daniel Koches had nine points and four rebounds while Willie Reese collected eight points and 13 rebounds.
“Even though we didn’t shoot well, we still had chances to win the game,” said coach Morris Hodges. “We didn’t do a good job on the defensive boards.”
The Vaqueros will take on Victor Valley or Glendale in the third-place game on Saturday at 1 p.m.
