A late rally by SBCC wasn’t enough to prevent an 84-76 women’s basketball loss to Grossmont on Saturday night in the semifinals of the MTXE Tournament at the Sports Pavilion.
Giovanna Aplin led the Vaqueros (1-1) with 15 points while Jake Kelly had 14 points, five rebounds, five assists, five steals and just two turnovers in her SBCC debut. Francesca DeAngelis added 14 points, Bridget Conlan had 12 and Mara Lux posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
The Vaqueros trailed 40-31 at halftime and 76-62 with 2:48 to play before cutting the deficit to six with 50 seconds left.
“If we had played the first 37 minutes like we did the last three, we would have won,” said coach Sandrine Krul.
Antelope Valley, ranked No. 5 in the state, beat Orange Coast in the other semifinal 57-52 and will take on Grossmont in Sunday’s championship game at 3 p.m.
SBCC will meet Orange Coast for third place on Sunday at 1 p.m., following the consolation final between Moorpark and Riverside at 11 a.m.
Moorpark knocked off Santa Ana 54-49 and Riverside beat Long Beach City 98-36.
