Sophomore outside hitter Alison Sharp tallied 20 kills while senior middle blocker Katey Lowry and senior outside hitter Stephanie Dunn each added 10 more as Westmont Volleyball defeated The Master’s 3-1 (25-22, 25-27, 28-26, 25-15).
With the win, Westmont improves to 16-13 overall and 7-12 in Golden State Athletic play. The Master’s falls to 10-19 overall and 2-17 in the GSAC standings.
Tied at 20 in the first set, Dunn and Sharp hit back-to-back kills to give the Warriors a 22-20 lead. After calling a timeout, the Mustangs tied the game on kills by Sarah Oskam and Caitlyn Ramirez. The Warriors then called their own time out before Sharp and Jenise DeBie connected for kills to give Westmont set point at 24-22. Sharp closed out the set with a service ace, giving the Warriors a 1-0 lead.
In the second set, the Warriors found themselves down 15-11 but battled back to tie the game at 19. The Master’s scored the next two points on an attack error by Dunn and a service ace by Tanya Bekendam, but Westmont responded with a Lowry kill and a service ace by Kristen Schroeder.
The two teams traded points all the way to 25-all before The Master’s tied the match at one set apiece with a block by Bekendam and Victoria Callihan and a Warrior setting error.
The third set was also proved to be a marathon session but this time it was the Warriors who fought back from a deficit to win. Down 24-22, Dunn and Kate Barton blocked an attack by Sarah Oskam. Dunn followed with a kill to tie the game at 24-all. Oskam produced a kill to once again give the Mustangs set point, but Lowry and Sharp pounded down kills to give set point to the Warriors. An attack error by Bekendam resulted in a Warrior win and a 2-1 lead in the match.
The fourth set started out as a close match. Down 7-6, the Warriors manufactured a 3-0 run to take the lead. From that point on, the Warriors began to take control. Up 14-12, Westmont went on a 7-0 run and never looked back.
The Warriors will conclude the regular season with a road trip to #1 Fresno Pacific on Saturday. The match is scheduled to begin at three o’clock.
