The SBCC women’s cross country team took eighth place in the Southern Cal Championships on Friday morning at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut. Seanie Rigney (28th, 19:23) and Erika Schaeffer (39th, 19:45) led the Vaqueros in the 28-school competition on a 2.91-mile course.
“We’ve been bouncing around the rankings between 10 and 15 and I’ve felt we were a top-10 team all year,” said coach Scott Fickerson. “We ran really fast, executed well and ran our best race when it mattered most.”
The women earned a spot in the State Meet on Nov. 21 in Fresno. Glendale won the women’s meet with 44 points while SBCC had 295.
Mark Moreno, the runner-up in the WSC Championships, took 16th for the men in 21:19 on the four-mile course. He earned a spot in the State Meet and will probably be joined by Matt Organista (97th, 22:49), according to Fickerson.
“We struggled a little,” Fickerson noted. “Some guys were intimidated and some had nagging injuries. Mark went out a little conservative, then finished strong. I think he left something on the course.”
