SBCC scored a season-high 97 points on Saturday afternoon but still came up short in a 104-97 men’s basketball loss at Palomar. It was the second game in the San Diego area in less than 24 hours for the Vaqueros (1-3).
Freshman guard Steven Saenz poured in a season-high 26 points. Lucky Teeguarden added 25 while David Lane had 18 points, six rebounds and four assists for the Vaqueros, who trailed 54-40 at the half.
“We got off to a slow start and our defense was very poor,” said coach Morris Hodges. “We didn’t do a good job of stopping their dribble penetration.”
Willie Reese, a 6-6 freshman from Santa Barbara High, suffered a slight concussion in the early going and never returned. The Vaqueros played the last nine minutes without a big man after 6-8 Ryan Gosselin fouled out.
SBCC will take on San Bernardino Valley, the top-ranked team in the state, in the first round of Oxnard’s Condor Classic on Nov. 27 at 3 p.m.
