SBCC enters finale in offensive groove

After scoring 12 touchdowns in the first six games, SBCC erupted for a dozen TDs in the last two weeks, including six in last Saturday’s 41-24 triumph at Los Angeles Valley.

The Vaqueros (3-6, 2-4) hope to continue their offensive fireworks in Saturday’s football season finale against East L.A. (4-5, 4-2). Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at La Playa Stadium.

ThreePicklesFreeSoda“They’re good offensively, they’re athletic and they’ve got a good quarterback,” said third-year SBCC coach Craig Moropoulos. “They’ve scored a lot of points and our defense will be challenged again.”

SBCC is averaging 40.5 points the last two weeks. The Vaqueros and East L.A. have combined for 167 points in the last two games.

The Huskies are ranked No. 2 in the American Pacific Conference in scoring (31.6) and passing yards per game (303). SBCC is No. 1 in pass defense (192 yards) and No. 2 in scoring defense (27.6).

The Huskies beat West L.A. 35-29 last week as quarterback Pedro Velasquez completed 33-of-41 passes for 361 yards and four touchdowns. Velasquez has passed for 2,710 yards and 20 TDs with eight interceptions.

SBCC’s Tristan Carter rushed for a season-high 147 yards with a 10.5-yard average and two touchdowns last week while quarterback Cale Carson completed 11-of-17 passes for 162 yards and two more scores.

“Cale has been a big part of our offense and so have Tristan Carter, Robyn Lawson and Michael Douglas (the running backs),” said Moropoulos. “The big thing is our offensive line has played really well and they’re maturing every week.”

Santa Barbara’s defense shut down the APC’s No. 1 passer last week, holding Bret Visciglia to 18 completions in 43 attempts for 283 yards and two TDs with an interception. They also limited the Monarchs to 80 rushing yards.

“We need to contain them and not allow big plays,” Moropoulos concluded. “Offensively, we have to control the ball. We also need to win the special teams battles, just like we did last week.”
