The Condor League champion Cate girls tennis team couldn’t extend its season on Thursday afternoon as the Rams fell 13-5 to the visiting Santa Ynez Pirates in the first round of CIF’s Division V playoffs.
“I was expecting and hoping for a much stronger showing from our team today but Santa Ynez played very solid tennis across the board and we were a little tentative out of the blocks,” said Rams head coach Barbara DeGroot.
Cate’s No. 1 doubles team of senior captain Allegra Roth and sophomore Sarah Cohen were dominant for the Rams, sweeping their three sets.
“It’s been a joy to watch Allegra and Sarah’s progress this season. They became an exceptionally good doubles team,” said DeGroot.
DeGroot handed out several season-long awards to her players. Roth was co-winner of the team’s Coach’s Award with teammate Annaliese Schroeder. Co-MVP honors went to singles players Mady Snider and Marguerite Mannix. The Most Improved award went to junior Nikita Kokal.
