A night after a thrilling victory over UC Davis which put the UCSB women’s volleyball team in first place in the Big West, the Gauchos were swept by Pacific on Saturday night, 25-20, 25-15, 25-15.
UCSB is now 20-7 overall and 10-5 in the Big West. Pacific improves to 17-10 overall and 7-8.
Playing without All-America candidate Rebecca Saraceno, who missed the weekend’s matches with a knee injury suffered last weekend, the Gauchos didn’t have a single player reach double-digit kills on Saturday. It was only the second time this season that UCSB failed to record a double-digit kill performance.
Stacey Schmidt had eight kills while Charlene DeHoog had seven. Chelsey Lowe had 13 digs to lead the team while DeHoog and Leah Sully each had 10. Setter Dana Vargas had only 18 assists, which were a season low.
“We just couldn’t get into an offensive rhythm,” UCSB head coach Kathy Gregory said.
As a team the Gauchos hit just .105. Pacific swung at a .321 clip. UCSB, which had 13 team blocks vs. UC Davis, managed just two solo blocks and eight block assists on the night.
The Gauchos have two more regular-season matches, as they face Cal State Northridge on Saturday, Nov. 21 and then San Diego State on Tuesday, Nov. 24.
Those matches are at 7 p.m. in the Thunderdome.
