San Marcos’ girls volleyball team was swept by top-ranked Dos Pueblos on Senior Night at the Thunderhut on Tuesday, 25-12, 25-14, 25-19.
Sally Yingst had seven aces in the first set alone for the Chargers, who finished the regular season at 23-2 and 8-0 in the Channel League. Kelcey Chaffin had five kills on six attempts and setter Paige Craine dished out assists to eight different attackers. Nicki Brown had four digs and Karina Evans nabbed three blocks.
“Katie Spieler, Gaelen Vasquez, and Jordan Roberts did a great job passing and digging the ball so we could get the ball to the hitters,” said Chargers coach Todd Garrett.
The Royals have one match remaining, on Thursday at Ventura. It’s been a rough season for San Marcos, but picking up a league win to close things out would provide a big boost for the program heading into next season.
“If we play like we played in the (Tournament of Champions) last weekend, I think we have a real good chance of winning,” said coach Courtney Preston.
She also said that the team will miss the seniors — Sam Flattery, Robin Zelko, Mallory Zaunius, Casey Harding-Brown, Katie Shera, Paulina King and Holly Emerson — next season.
“All the seniors are quality girls who as a coach you look back on and remember because they are really outstanding people,” she said.
