Mayer, Soos, Waddill crowd WSC first-team

Maria Mayer, Kelsey Soos and Jenn Waddill were named to the first-team All-WSC North women’s volleyball squad on Friday in a vote of the conference coaches at Ventura College.

Eight players off the Vaqueros WSC co-championship squad were named all-conference. SBCC (20-2, 9-1) had a school-record 12-game win streak during the year and finished with eight straight wins, including a 3-2 upset of No. 4 Moorpark on Nov. 10.

Santa Barbara was ranked No. 5 in the final regular-season poll, one spot behind Moorpark.

Vaquero coach Ed Gover won Coach of the Year honors for the second time.

Mayer, a sophomore left-hander, ranks ninth in the WSC with 191 kills. Soos, a freshman from Santa Ynez High, is first in aces (51) and assists (813) while Waddill, a freshman middle from San Marcos High, is No. 1 in WSC hitting percentage at .484 and No. 8 in kills with 201.

Nicole Bergmann, who ranks second in hitting percentage at .421, made the second team, along with Jessica Tune and Antonia Antes. Libero Jake Kelly and outside hitter Emilia Shugrue were honorable mention.

The Southern Cal Regional pairings will be announced on Saturday and SBCC is hoping for a top-4 seeding which would ensure them of home games in the first two rounds. The first round will be played on Tuesday, Nov. 24 and the Vaqueros, currently ranked No. 4 in Southern California, will be at home at 7 p.m.

SBCC is 11-0 at home this year and has won 15 straight in the Sports Pavilion.
