Meghan Maiwald earned her 10th shutout of the season Tuesday night as SBCC downed Cuesta 1-0 in a WSC women’s soccer match at La Playa Stadium. Maiwald, a sophomore from San Jose, extended her school-record career shutout total to 23. She’s No. 7 in the state with a 0.40 goals-against average.
SBCC, ranked 14th in Southern California, improved to 10-3-6 and 5-2-2 in the WSC.
After a Cuesta player got a red card, the Cougars played the final 50 minutes with 10 players. SBCC’s goal came in the 76th minute when Renee Block played the ball across and a Cuesta defender slipped and knocked it into her own goal.
“We had a play developing and if their player hadn’t scored, the ball probably would have gone to our player and we could have scored,” said coach John Sisterson. “Renee played well and Alyson Johnson was steady in the back.
“We’re ranked 14th right now and the top 16 go to the playoffs.”
SBCC closes out the regular season on Friday with a 5:30 p.m. game at Ventura.
