Sophomore guard David Lane tossed in 19 points with five assists on Sunday, guiding SBCC past Oxnard 76-72 in the consolation final of Oxnard’s Condor Classic men’s basketball tournament. Lane earned all-tourney honors after scoring 53 points and dishing out 12 assists in three games.
The Vaqueros (3-4) used a 10-0 game-ending run to beat a WSC North rival for the second straight day. They topped Ventura 91-74 on Saturday.
Daniel Koches and Lucky Teeguarden added 16 points each while Chris Vines had 15 and five rebounds off the bench. Vines, a freshman guard from San Marcos High, was 6-of-7 from the field, including 3-4 on 3-pointers. With his team up by two, Koches hit two free throws with 15 seconds left to secure the win.
Ryan Gosselin grabbed seven rebounds for the Vaqueros, who led 41-35 halftime, then overcame a six-point deficit (72-66) by holding the Condors scoreless over the final 4:06.
“The key was our defense,” said coach Morris Hodges. “We forced turnovers on four of their last five possessions. Lane had a couple of big buckets during our 10-0 run and Vines had a big putback.
“It was good to see us bounce back with two wins over conference opponents after losing to the top-ranked team (San Bernardino Valley) in the state.”
SBCC will travel north to play in the Monterey Bay Classic on Thursday, taking on Irvine Valley in the first round at 7 p.m.
