Sophomore guard Emilie Johnson was named the Big West Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday after the Loomis, Calif. native led the UCSB women’s basketball team in scoring in both of her team’s games last week.
Johnson had 14 points and six rebounds while handing out four assists in the Gauchos’ game vs. Kentucky on Wednesday, but the sophomore saved her best for last.
The 5-foot-6 guard scored a career-high 29 points – the most by a Gaucho player since Jessica Wilson scored 30 points on Nov. 10, 2006 vs. Portland State – in UCSB’s 75-65 victory over San Diego on Sunday. Johnson hit five three-pointers in the game, including the tiebreaker with 3:14 to go. She also had six rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line.
On the season Johnson is averaging 14.6 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game.
