The UCSB swim team cruised by Cal State Northridge and UC San Diego in a triple dual meet Friday at Campus pool. The Gaucho men and Gaucho women beat both Northridge and UCSD by a considerable margin. The men beat Northridge 168-78 and UCSD, 155-96, while the women beat Northridge 159-94 and UCSD, 144-112.
The Gauchos started off strong with both the men’s and women’s “A” and “B” 200 medley relays taking first and second, respectively. The women’s team consisting of Naomi Javanifard, Ann Marie May, Katie Ure and Kendall Neely touched first with a time of 1:45.89. The men’s team touched first thanks to Kevin Ferguson, Tim Freeman, Danny McClary and Christ Peterson in a time of 1:34.19.

The first individual race of the meet was another win for UCSB with Meagan Brown touching first in the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 12:21.62.
In the men’s 1,000 free, UC San Diego’s Jereme Bernett-Woods beat UCSB’s Brett Chamberlain to take first with a time of 9:42.84. Bernett-Woods also took second in the 500 yard free with a time of 4:42.33.
The rest of the meet belonged to the Gauchos. In the 200 free, Katie Stover finished first with a time of 1:51.76 and Katie Tomkinson finished third with a time of 1:55.69, just getting out-touched by UCSD’s Anju Shimura with a time of 1:55.10.
Scott Vogelgesang and Shane Hurter took one-two in the 200 free with times of 1:41.12 and 1:43.00 respectively. Vogelgesang also took first in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:39.52.
The UCSB men swept the 100 yard backstroke event with Kevin Ferguson coming in first (51.57),Brandon Shilling second (52.43) and Zack Humphreys third (54.04).
The 200 butterfly event was the highlight of the meet for the Gauchos with both the men and women taking the top four spots. For the women, Brittany Borowitz finished first with a time of 2:05.71, Marianna Prutton was second at 2:05.82, Kelsey Lewis was third in 2:06.87 and finally Emily Adamczyk finished fourth, clocking 2:07.17.
Leading the men in the 200 butterfly was Danny McClary with a time of 1:52.03, Chris Wiggin came in second with a time of 1:52.23, Mitchell Long was third at 1:52.38 and Max Horrell placed fourth with a time of 1:53.72.
In the 50 freestyle, UCSB’s men and women took first and second. For the women, it was May (23.61) and Neely (24.03) and for the men it was Peterson (20.52) and Hanni (20.93). May also placed first in the 100 free, with a quick time of 51.64.
Hanni got right back in the water for the next event, the 100 free, and placed first with a fast time of 45.84.
The only two events that the Gauchos did not win the rest of the way were the women’s 200 yard breaststroke and the 500 free. UCSD’s Cari Cunningham claimed first in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:23.28. The highest finisher for UCSB was senior Carri Cook who placed fifth with a time of 2:31.97. UC San Diego’s Alexandra Henley easily got first in the 500 free with a time of 4:59.00.
UCSB finished very strong in the 400 free relays in which both the men and women won. Stover, Javanifard, Courtney Bauer and May easily took first with a time of 3:28.19 while the men’s team of Vogelgesang, Peterson, Hanni and Kevin Kuhn touched first with a time of 3:03.88.
The UCSB swim teams returns to the pool on Saturday, Nov. 21 when they travel San Luis Obispo, Calif., to take on Cal Poly. The first event will start at 11:00 a.m.
