UCSB ended the 2009 season by overpowering Pacific with a 20-11 victory in the seventh-place game of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament on Sunday morning at McDonald’s Swim Stadium on the USC campus.
The Gauchos were the first to get on the board when Zsombor Vincze fired a shot from eight meters out to give UCSB a 1-0 lead just 42 seconds into the first quarter. During the next possession, Pacific’s Austin DeLong tied the game at one-all.
Kendell Olds regained the lead for UCSB a minute later when he cherry picked during a Tiger possession. When the ball was turned over, goalkeeper Fraser Bunn passed the ball to Olds, who beat two defenders at the opposite end of the pool and scored.
Brian Bishop pushed the UCSB lead to two goals three minutes later when he scored on a skip shot. Lance Morrison quickly put the Tigers back within one with a goal out of center with 2:41 to go in the quarter, but UCSB once against distanced itself, closing out the quarter with three consecutive goals coming from Milos Golic, Vincze and Sean Castillo.
After Joey Gullikson opened the scoring for the Tigers just 48 seconds into the third quarter, the Gauchos went on another run, notching three unanswered goals. UCSB outscored Pacific 7-4 during the quarter behind two goals from both Golic and Vincze.
The Gauchos went on to outscore the Tigers 7-5 in the second half of the game, leading by five or more goals the remainder of the way.
Vincze led all players with six goals in the victory while Milos Golic notched four for the Gauchos. Bishop chipped in a hat trick while Olds and Castillo each chipped in a pair during their final collegiate game.
Bunn tallied 10 saves in the first three quarters, including a blocked five-meter penalty shot in the third quarter. Myles Christian tallied two saves in the final quarter.
