The Gaucho men and women’s swim teams both beat the Cal Poly Mustangs in an exciting meet this Saturday in what proved to be an almost even matchup. The women edged out Cal Poly 172 to 122 while the men had an even narrower margin with a score of 152.5 to 137.5.
The Gauchos got off to a good start with wins from the men and women’s 200 medley relays. Naomi Javanifard, Anne Marie May, Katie Ure and Kendall Neely came in first with a time of 1:46.32 for the women. Kevin Ferguson, Tim Freeman, Danny McClary and Chris Peterson touched first with a time of 1:32.96 for the men.
Cal Poly swept the distance races thanks to Lacey Buck and Matt Waggoner. Buck won both the 1000 freestyle (10:21.37) and the 500 freestyle (5:03.47). Waggoner did the same with a time of 9:32.77 in the 1000 and 4:36.70 in the 500.
Katie Stover redeemed the Gauchos by winning the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:52.51. Stover also won the 200 backstroke later that day with a time of 2:04.25.
The 100 breaststroke went to the Mustangs. Danielle Coville touched first with a time of 1:06.97 and J. Carter Richards came in first with a time of 58.05.
But the Gauchos retaliated with back to back wins in the 200 butterfly. UCSB’s Mariana Prutton swam in first with a time of 2:05.36 and Brittany Borowitz came in second with a time of 2:06.91. For the men, Chris Wiggin, McClary, Mitchell Long and Max Horrell swept the event with Wiggin touching with a time of 1:50.88.
The sprint freestyle events went to the Gauchos as well. The women took the top four spots in the 50 freestyle and leading the pack was May with a time of 23.94. For the men Peterson touched first with a time of 20.73 and Kevin Kuhn came in second with a time of 21.33. May and Peterson also came in first in the 100 freestyle with times of 51.92 and 46.26.
The Mustangs caught up to the Gauchos thanks to their men’s and women’s diving teams.
UCSB ended the meet stong finishing first in all events except the 200 backstroke and 200 IM thanks to Cal Poly’s Peter Kline who placed first in both.
The women’s `A’ and `B’ 400 free relays finished one-two with Neely, Javanifard, Sasza Lohrey and May coming in with a time of 1:35.68. The men’s `A’ relay of Hanni, Peterson, Ferguson and Kuhn came in first with a time of 1:23.59.
