The NCAA men’s water polo season is far from over, but one local product has already won a national championship with his college team.
Former Santa Barbara Don Mack Carlson, a senior at Tufts University, led the Jumbos to the Division III Club Water Polo National Championship last weekend at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine.
Tufts fought back from an 0-2 deficit in the first quarter to defeat Monmouth College 9-6. Before that, the Jumbos defeated NYU in the semifinals and Grinnell College in the quarterfinals. Carlson’s team had finished third in the tournament the previous three years.
“We definitely managed to come through the tougher side of the bracket to reach the championship,” Carlson told the Tufts Daily. “It was the fiercest competition we have faced all season.”
