Frannie DeAngelis scored 28 points and grabbed seven rebounds Friday night, leading SBCC to a 70-53 women’s basketball victory over Long Beach City in the opening round of its MTXE Tournament.
The 18th-ranked Vaqueros won despite making only 23 percent (24-104) from the field and having all five starters on the bench with foul trouble after 10 minutes. DeAngeles hit 11-of-21 from the field and 3-4 from beyond the 3-point line.
Chelsea Hewitt and Hannah Cooper came off the bench to score 10 and nine points, respectively. The Vaquero bench extended a 21-18 lead to 37-23 at intermission.
“I’m ecstatic,” said SBCC coach Sandrine Krul. “When your second and third unit can outscore a team by 14 points in 10 minutes, that makes a coach happy.”
Long Beach closed to within seven, 47-40, with 10:42 to play before DeAngelis reeled off nine unanswered points.
SBCC’s post players went 0-for-23 from the floor while the starting guards were 1-27. Jennifer Stevens was the top rebounder with nine.
In other first-round games, No. 5 Antelope Valley beat Santa Ana 65-48, No. 15 Orange Coast knocked off Moorpark 63-45 and Grossmont edged Riverside 68-66.
The Vaqueros will take on Grossmont at 7 p.m. tonight in the championship semifinals with Antelope Valley and Orange Coast squaring off at 5 p.m. In the consolation semis, Santa Ana meets Moorpark at 1 p.m., followed by Riverside and Long Beach City at 3 p.m.
