Westmont women’s volleyball went to Azusa Pacific on Tuesday night and nearly pulled off an upset against the NAIA’s sixth ranked team. After falling in the first set 25-18, the Warriors won the next two 25-18, 25-20. The Cougars came back to take the fourth set 25-14 and force a final and decisive set.
Westmont was up 11-8 in the fifth set before Azusa Pacific scored the next four to take a 12-11 lead. The Warriors responded with kills by Candace Adema and Jenise DeBie to take a 13-12 advantage, but the Cougars scored the next two to gain match point at 14-13.
Another kill by DeBie and an attack error by Azusa Pacific gave Westmont match point at 15-14, but the Cougars scored the next three points to take both the set and the match.
Samantha Miller posted 16 kills and a .312 attack percentage to lead the Warriors. Beth Widicus recorded 12 kills while Katey Lowry added another 11. Jill Baker led the Cougars with 24 kills and a .340 attack percentage.
Setter Kailee Blair recorded 24 assists for the Warriors and Candace Adema contributed 23 more. Erin Dohm posted 25 service receptions and 17 digs.
The Warriors will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Riverside to take on #2 California Baptist.
