Junior midfielder Jameisha Washington scored in overtime to give the Westmont women’s soccer a 1-0 win in Fullerton over Hope International. Brittney Scannell kicked a floating ball across the face of the goal to set up the score. Washington managed to free herself from two Royal defenders and head the ball in the net to score the golden goal. Westmont improves to 6-6-1 overall and 4-4 in the Golden State Athletic Conference Standings.
“The game conditions were very difficult,” said Westmont Associate Head Coach Kristi Kiely. “The field was narrow and hard. It was very difficult to settle the ball because it kept bounding around. It was a very direct game and we were not really able to play our style of soccer. But we weathered the storm and came away with a win.”
Kiely was pleased with the efforts of the Warriors’ defense.
“Roxanne (Love) had a key save in the second half on a shot to the near post,” said Kiely, “and later knocked away another shot that took a weird bounce. Our back four played as a unit and were very solid.”
Scannell, Kayla Barkett, Candace Marques and Skyla Lauda started in the back for the Warriors. But 15 minutes into the second half, Scannell was moved into the midfield and replaced in the back with Nicole Yankey.
“Moving Brit up to the midfield made a difference in the game,” noted Kiely. “Nicole came in and did her job in the back and Brit gave us some extra energy in up front.”
Enjoying their home field advantage, the Royals out shot the Warriors 15-8 and held a 9-3 corner kick advantage. Love recorded seven saves in the shutout, her third of the season.
