The L.A. Pierce Brahmas’ aerial explosion at La Playa Stadium Saturday night grounded the SBCC football team, which was defeated 46-14.
Matt Wabby led the Brahmas with 393 yards on 18-30 passing and three touchdowns, using a no-huddle offense and lots of air time. He also rushed for two scores.
“They’re one heck of a football team,” Craig Moropoulos said. “They did a great job passing the ball.”
Wabby’s first two possessions were bleak, however. On the first, the Vaqs made a goal line stand at the 2-yard-line to force a turnover on downs. The following drive, Wabby was picked off on the Santa Barbara 4-yard-line by an acrobatic Aeryus Holloway going high into the air to retrieve the football.
With three quarterbacks— Jordan Esparza, Oscar Medina, and Tristan Carter — rotating under center, it was difficult for the SBCC offense to find a heartbeat. Medina is a receiver and Carter a running back.
“When you got a receiver playing quarterback, its tough,” Moropoulos said. “We’re working hard.”
After Holloway’s pick, the City College offense failed to get anything going and a punt was returned 42-yards by Edmond Coleman to the Vaquero 5-yard line. Two plays later Wabby connected a 3-yard touchdown pass to Charles Pearson.
After a Vaquero turnover on downs, L.A. Pierce took over on their own five-yard-line and scampered down the field on six plays for 95 yards. The drive was capped off with a nice one-handed grab by Edmond Coleman for 60-yards through the core of the City College defense.
The Brahma offense was running on all cylinders by that point, scoring its third touchdown in the first half on a second-and-one when Wabby took the ball himself and lunged over his offensive line for a score to make it 21-0.
The SBCC offense then came to life on a 5-play 66-yard-drive starting with a 15-yard dash from do-it-all Medina. The drive was concluded with a 15-yard fade pattern from Medina to Nicholas Amey.
The Brahmas pulled the plug on the Vaqs’ hopes of winning at the beginning of the fourth quarter when Wabby threaded the needle between two City College defenders en route to Julian Damon for a 49-yard-touchdown pass.
The Vaqs continued to play tough and in the waning seconds of the game. Michael Douglas galloped 68-yards through the heart of the Brahma defense for a touchdown and the longest offensive play of the season as City College showed no quit.
“Our guys are out there playing hard,” Moropoulos said. “I’m proud of them.”
The Vaqueros fall to 2-5 on the year and 1-3 in the American Pacific Conference. L.A. Pierce holds onto its supremacy on top of the Conference.
SBCC out-rushed the Brahmas 177 yards to 151 and forced the potent offense to five fumbles, three of which they recovered.
The Vaqueros will look to avenge this loss when travel to L.A. Valley at 1 p.m. on Halloween.
