SBCC’s Erika Schaeffer placed third in the 5K women’s race and Mark Moreno was fourth in the men’s four-mile loop on a warm Friday afternoon at the SBCC Invitational cross country meet.
Schaeffer, a freshman from Thousand Oaks, posted her best finish of the year in 22:10 on a tough course at Shoreline Park. Courtney Gooch of Fresno City won the race in 21:30. SBCC’s Alex Thompson was seventh in 23:30 and Sarah Gustavsson was eighth in 23:39.
Ventura took the women’s team title with 24 points in a race with only three scoring teams. The Vaqueros didn’t have a team score because they had just four runners with their top performer, Seanie Rigney, sidelined with a minor injury.
Moreno placed fourth in the men’s race in 22:29 with Steven Semler 16th and Garrett Edwards 17th. The Vaqueros took fourth with 85 points. Sequoias won the title with 27 points, led by David Sanchez, who won his second straight SBCC title in 21:54.
“It’s a difficult course with soft beach sand, two hills (going up to Shoreline) and grass that’s pretty thick in the park,” noted Vaquero coach Scott Fickerson.
SBCC returns to action on Oct. 27 in the WSC Finals at Cuesta.
