After being off for two weeks, SBCC showed a little rust in Friday night’s WSC North women’s volleyball opener but still managed to sweep Oxnard 25-18, 25-20, 25-16 in the Sports Pavilion.
The Vaqueros, ranked No. 7 in the state, overcame early deficits in all three sets to improve to 12-1 overall. They stretched their school-record win streak to 12 in a row.
Jennifer Waddill had 11 kills with a .429 hitting percentage while fellow freshman middle blocker Nicole Bergmann had seven kills and hit .385. They entered the match as the top two hitters in the WSC with Waddill converting .523 of her attempts and Bergmann .497.
Case Jenkins collected four aces and 18 digs.
The Vaqueros trailed 8-3 in the opener before taking control with an 11-1 run that put them up 14-9. They overcame deficits of 9-3 and 19-14 in the second set. They put together another 11-1 burst to end set No. 2, capped by a Chelsey Forrey ace.
“It’s hard to go two weeks without playing anybody,” said coach Ed Gover. “We were a little rusty and a little out of sync to start. As the match wore on, they finally got back in their system and played with better rhythm.”
The Vaqueros will travel to No. 4 Moorpark on Tuesday.
