Sim goes even-par to help Vaqs

Asaka Sim fired an even-par 72 on Monday, leading the SBCC women’s golf squad to a second-place finish in WSC No. 6 at RiverLakes Ranch GC in Bakersfield.

Sim, a sophomore from Dos Pueblos High who won last year’s individual state title, earned her first medalist award of the season. Freshmen Kait Gatena and Anna Samson both shot 83.

Twin Lakes Golf CourseBakersfield won the title with 301 strokes, improving its WSC record to 23-1. SBCC was second at 330, three ahead of Canyons. The Vaqueros are second in conference at 16-8, one game ahead of Canyons.

“Our mode right now is to make the playoffs (by finishing in the top two in the WSC),” said coach Chuck Melendez. “We have to beat Canyons and we did that today.”

The Vaqueros will complete the regular season on Sunday and Monday in the WSC Finals (Nos. 7 and 8) at Olivas Park in Ventura.
