Playing at Lovik Field for the last time in the regular season, Westmont Women’s Soccer suffered a 2-1 loss in double overtime to the Sea Lions of Point Loma Nazarene. As a result of the loss, the Warriors fall to 2-4 in Golden State Athletic Conference play and 4-6-1 overall. Point Loma Nazarene improved to 9-3-1 overall and 4-3 in the GSAC.
“I thought we defended great,” said Westmont head coach Dave Wolf despite the loss. “I was really proud of the team. I thought they did a wonderful job of closing up space. I thought they were tough. While we were overmatched physically, I thought the defending by our team was fantastic.

“We were playing a 4-5-1 formation which is a more defensive formation,” continued Wolf. “We knew the chances were going to be hard to come by. We generated a few, not a lot. We were hoping to be real good defensively and win a 1-0 game.”
Senior midfielder Amanda Barret gave the Warriors the 1-0 lead that Wolf had anticipated. In the fifty-third minute, Barret put away a cross from junior midfielder Jenna Nelson.
“Amanda had a really good performance – her best of the regular season,” assessed Wolf. “She has had a very tough year physically. Her legs have started to come back a little bit which not only helps you get places, but also helps you to take a chance when you get it.”
Earlier in the season, Barret suffered a concussion which kept her sidelined for 10 days.
The lead would not last long. Four and one-half minutes after Barret scored, Point Loma’s Katie Pedlowe dribbled the ball toward the goal and struck the back of the net from the right side.
“We conceded a goal we should not have conceded,” said Wolf. “We gave up a soft goal. It is really disappointing for me and I feel really badly for the team. It should have been a 1-0 game for us.”
The winning goal came in the one-hundred eighth minute of play with just 2:20 showing on the second-overtime clock. Jennifer Tan scored the golden goal off a corner kick by Lauren Hernandez, sealing the deal for the Sea Lions.
The Warriors will be on the road next week, playing at #4 Azusa Pacific (11-2, 7-0 GSAC) on Wednesday and at Hope International (7-6-1, 1-5 GSAC) on Saturday.
