Something’s got to give on Saturday night when L.A. Pierce brings its high-scoring offense to La Playa Stadium for a 6 p.m. football game against SBCC and its No. 2-ranked defense.
“They’re a dangerous offense,” said Vaquero coach Craig Moropoulos. “We have to take care of the ball and keep them from making big plays.”
Pierce (4-2, 3-0) is tied for first in the American Pacific Conference with Antelope Valley. SBCC (2-4, 1-2) is tied for fifth after a 16-13 loss to Santa Monica.
SBCC quarterback John Uribe is probably out for the season after dislocating his left elbow in the second quarter of last Saturday’s game. Moropoulos said Oscar Medina, the Vaqueros leading receiver, and Jordan Esparza will split time at quarterback. Medina completed 12-of-18 passes for 100 yards last week and Esparza had a 1-yard scoring toss to Josh Misegadis that tied the score 13-13 in the fourth quarter.
The Brahmas have the No. 1 offense in the APC (32.7 avg.) while SBCC has the second-best defense (22.7 ppg). The Vaqueros’ pass defense (133.7 yards per game, 10 interceptions) is ranked No. 2 in Southern California. Two weeks ago, Pierce QB Matt Wabby threw for 490 yards and eight TDs in a 62-55 overtime win over West L.A. The Brahams outscored the Oilers 34-20 in the fourth quarter alone.
Pierce is averaging 40.3 in its last three games. Last week, the Brahmas blanked L.A. Southwest 24-0. SBCC beat Southwest by 28-3 on Oct. 3.
Moropoulos reported that offensive lineman Rick Aversano, who missed the Pierce game, is expected to play on Saturday.
The game can be heard on AM 1290 radio and on the internet at newspress.com.
As a former Vaquero (1974) it is especially exciting to hear the SBCC Football games over the radio.
I cant tell you how proud I am to have a son playing there now. I can tell the spirit on this team is unstoppable. I believe they can win this next game because there is something about being the underdogs that sets there guys on fire. The coaching has been brilliant with what talent we currently have. Our offense must move the ball to win. Good luck to my son Brandon Peters #92!
