The Rams were lost, and they turned to Erin Griffin to guide them out of the woods.
Cate’s girls volleyball team was missing three starters due to a broken pinky, a family emergency and a planned vacation, and there was no setter left to run the offense against Dunn on Saturday.
Griffin, typically a libero, stepped in to set for the first time all season and led Cate through some dramatic comebacks to win 24-26, 25-23, 25-23, 25-14.
The Rams trailed by 10 points in both the first and second sets and trailed for most of the third game as well.
“I was worried. Like I said, we were down 10 points in those games and things were looking pretty grim,” said Cate coach Dan Terry. “This says a lot about our team.”
Griffin finished with three kills, eight digs, four aces and 31 assists.
“She looked like she’s been setting all year,” said Terry.
Grace Gail filled in for Griffin at libero and tallied 18 digs while Addison Mayfield amassed 13 kills, 12 digs and four aces. Emma Burrell notched 11 kills and three aces while Sarah Martzloff had seven aces.
The Rams (5-3, 3-1 Condor League) served up 21 aces total. Next up is Thacher on Wednesday, and Terry said it’s possible that Griffin will have to run the offense again.
