Earwigs eaten up by Rams

The Cate football team turned a 22-7 halftime lead into a 49-15 blowout win with 21 unanswered points in the third quarter on Saturday, posting a Condor League win at Dunn.

The Rams are undefeated at 5-0, and are now 2-0 in the league.

ThreePicklesFreeSodaRandy Person rushed for three touchdowns on the day, and tight end Jackson Mauze added a pair. Person scored on runs of 21, three and nine yards while Mauze found the end zone on a 14-yard reverse and a 35-yard screen pass, both in the Rams’ big third quarter.

The Rams went up 43-7 before the Earwigs scored a touchdown with less than a second to go in the third to bring the score to 43-15 after a successful two-point conversion. Quarterback Mackie Greason threw a 20-yard TD pass to Luke Shover in the fourth to close out the scoring. Harry Grunner also had a touchdown for the Rams on a 5-yard scamper.

“Mackie played a great game at quarterback, checking out of plays and making the right calls,” said coach Ben Soto.

Soto also highlighted the play of Cormac O’Connor at fullback. He played both ways effectively, as did Greg Mak and Mario Pioquinto. On the defensive side, Soto said that Kevin Chou, Michael Warren and Ugo Nwasike did a nice job of pressuring Dunn’s pass-happy quarterback.
