Santa Barbara was eager to get back to its winning ways after Tuesday night’s girls volleyball loss to Dos Pueblos, and it spelled bad news for San Marcos as the Royals were swept 25-13, 25-11, 25-17 at the Thunderhut on Wednesday.
“San Marcos was better this time, and they played scrappy, but I think our girls were just really anxious to get back out there,” said Santa Barbara assistant coach Lee Carlander. “You worry about them being down after a match like that, but they weren’t.”
Stephanie Scarminach had 12 digs and Lauren Capritto filled in admirably at libero once again, collecting 10 digs. Emily Rottman put away 11 kills while Eve Ettinger had eight and Dani Rottman added six.
San Marcos coach Courtney Preston said that Sam Flattery had some great digs at critical times in the third game and that Emma Campbell passed well as always.
“Laura Masho came in for the third game and set well. I thought we served tough and played scrappy in that third game,” she said.
The No. 2 Dons (16-6, 5-2) host Corona del Mar in their first match of the Tournament of Champions at 11 a.m. on Friday. San Marcos (2-11, 0-6) plays Archbishop Mitty, the nation’s top-ranked team, simultaneously on the adjacent court at J.R. Richards Gym.
