On the eve of Tuesday’s Channel League boys water polo clash between Dos Pueblos and Santa Barbara, both teams moved up in the latest CIF poll released on Monday.
The Chargers, ranked No. 4 in Div. I all season, moved up to a season-high No. 3 while Santa Barbara improved by two spots to No. 8. DP won its only game played last week, a 13-12 overtime win at home against JSerra, the No. 2 team in D-II. The Chargers slipped past El Toro, the previous No. 3, who lost to the new No. 4, Corona del Mar, 8-7 on Friday. The Dons picked up two Channel League wins last week against Buena and San Marcos.
In girls volleyball, Dos Pueblos strengthened its hold on the No. 1 ranking in Div. I-A by winning the California Challenge over the weekend. Carly Wopat was named Tournament-MVP as the Chargers recorded three impressive wins against top programs Mira Costa, La Costa Canyon and Torrey Pines on Saturday alone.
Santa Barbara, No. 2 behind Dos Pueblos in Div. I-A, and Laguna Blanca, No. 6 in Div. IV-AA, remained the same in this week’s girls volleyball poll.
Dos Pueblos was not included in this week’s boys cross country poll as they were last week. The Chargers were slotted at No. 14 in the previous poll but only 13 teams were ranked this week. The Cate girls, led by Mackenzie Walsh, are No. 8 in Div. V.
The Santa Barbara girls tennis team, which has already clinched at least a share of its 29th consecutive Channel League title, is locked in at No. 2 in Div. II behind Palm Desert.
