Anteaters give Gauchos cold shoulder in conference opener

IRVINE – The UC Irvine women’s soccer team (8-3-1, 1-0) defeated UCSB (3-7-1, 0-1) 3-0 Friday night in Big West Conference play at Anteater Stadium in Irvine.

Freshman Sarah Devine headed a ball in off a corner kick by freshman Dana Sanderlin in the 37th minute to give UCI a 1-0 lead.

The Anteaters came out quickly in the second half as Sanderlin passed a ball to junior Milana Shabestari who blasted the ball to the upper left corner of the net giving her team a 2-0 lead at 46:54.

Just over a minute later, Sanderlin was creating again and this time she found freshman Devon Delarosa on the left side of the box. Delarosa sent it across the cage and into the right side of the net for a 3-0 Anteater lead in the 49th minute.

Junior keeper Danielle de Seriere had two saves as she earned her sixth shutout of the season. UCSB goalkeeper Ali Cutler had one save for the Gauchos.

UCSB managed just seven shots overall, two of which were on goal. Sophomores Alissa Sanchez and Katy Roby had the Gauchos’ on-frame shots

Sanderlin’s three assists ties a UCI record set by Gina Hintz against Utah State in 2001.

UCSB returns to Big West action on Sunday afternoon when it travels to Cal State Northridge for a 2:30 p.m. match against the Matadors.
