SAN DIEGO – All-tournament choice Jessica Tune had 18 kills on the day, leading the SBCC women’s volleyball squad to a second-place finish at the 13-team San Diego City Invitational on Saturday.
After knocking off Yavapai, Ariz., 22-25, 25-20, 15-8 in pool play, the Vaqueros (9-1) lost a one-game final to Yavapai 25-21.
“It was a great final with everyone going for loose balls and crashing into chairs,” said coach Ed Gover.
Nicole Bergmann led SBCC with 25 kills in 10 sets. Jenn Waddill had 21 kills and Maria Mayer contributed 18. Kelsey Soos had 12 aces and did a greta job of getting the ball to all the hitters, according to Gover.
SBCC beat Pima, Ariz., 25-16 and San Diego City 25-14 in the playoffs to reach the championship. The Vaqueros went 3-0 in pool play, downing Rio Hondo (25-10, 25-20), Yavapai and Southwestern (25-14, 25-13). The matches don’t count on their record because they weren’t best 3-of-5.
SBCC returns to action on Tuesday with a 6 p.m. home date against Canyons.
