Three SB surfers make national team

With a trip to New Zealand to compete at the ISA Junior Surfing World Championships on the line, Santa Barbara’s Parker Coffin made a strong case that he belongs on Team USA’s final roster after pulling down his first national title at the SIMA National Championships last weekend at the Huntington Beach Pier.

Parker’s older brother, Conner, and Lakey Peterson – who were both on the 2008 team in Ecuador – each recorded runner-up results and are virtually assured a spot in New Zealand.

The results from the SIMA National Championships help determine the 15 surfers chosen for the elite USA Surf Team, of which 12 will make the traveling team headed for New Zealand in January to compete against the world’s best young surfers.

At the 2008 World Championships, Conner Coffin posted a 7th-place finish in the boys 16s and Peterson – one of the youngest females in the competition at only 13 – recorded a top-20 finish in the girls 18s.

Peterson, now 14, won her first NSSA National Championship in June and made the finals in both the girls 16s and 18s over the weekend.

Parker, 13, earned his national title in the boys 14s and also reached the finals in the boys 16s where he butted heads with Team USA veterans Kolohe Andino, Luke Davis and older brother Conner. Andino won one of his two titles by besting the Coffin brothers and Davis with a two-wave score of 17.50 out of 20 in the final. Conner was second with 16.34.
