SBCC’s Danny Molineaux broke a scoreless tie in the 52nd minute Friday night but No. 10 Taft responded with three goals in 22 minutes and went on to beat the Vaqueros 3-1 at La Playa Stadium. Stuart Kirk set up the Vaquero goal with a perfect pass to the cutting Molineaux.
Taft (7-2-1) won its sixth straight game while the Vaqueros (0-5-1) remained winless. SBCC has played a tough schedule with four of its opponents ranked in the state’s top 10.
The Vaqueros have lost their top two goalies to injuries. Jose Contreras, a freshman from Carpinteria High, made his second start on Friday night.
“Taft is a good team, I’d be surprised if they don’t make the Final Four,” said SBCC coach John Sisterson. “It was a battle and this will prepare us well for our conference opener.
“The boys are staying positive. I don’t think we were outmatched at all. We’re 0-0 in the conference and looking forward to Tuesday.”
SBCC travels to L.A. Mission to open its 14-game Western State Conference slate on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
