Dos Pueblos is the early favorite to win the Channel League in boys water polo, with a No. 4 ranking in Division I and a solid record of preseason success under its belt.
Ventura, however, is ranked sixth and gave DP a run for its money in both teams’ league-opener Friday. Ultimately, the Chargers (12-4, 1-0) prevailed, 7-6.
Derek Shoemaker had three goals, three steals and two field blocks for DP in the match.
“We knew it was going to be tough coming into their home pool. Their pool is a little smaller than we’re used to and the wall cages really throw off our shooters,” said coach Chris Parrish. “It could have gone either way, but I think the best team won… For us, we know we can’t take anyone lightly.”
Chase Racich added a pair of goals for the Chargers, who play at Buena next week.
