SBHS spikers look worn out in loss to Wolverines

It was a long road trip and an emotionally taxing weekend for the Santa Barbara High girls volleyball team at the Archbishop Mitty Tournament, and it showed on Tuesday.

The Dons went down and faced a perennially strong Harvard-Westlake team in Sherman Oaks and fell 25-17, 25-22, 22-25, 25-22.

“We just looked a little sluggish. It was tough to go on the the road after an emotional weekend in which we overachieved,” said Gannon of his team, which finished third at the tournament.

Heat was also an issue, as Gannon said that the temperature gague in the van topped 109 degrees on the way down, and the Wolverines’ gym was “toasty” during the match.

“They have a pretty good outside hitter who’s going to UCLA. They’re a good, quality squad,” he said.

Emily Rottman returned from illness and recorded 11 kills with 19 digs, and Eve Ettinger racked up 19 kills with six digs. Libero Sarah Mendoza added 26 digs.

Santa Barbara (9-2) has a full week to rest and practice before its marquee matchup at Dos Pueblos on Tuesday.
