SBCC goalie Meghan Maiwald turned in a stellar performance on Tuesday night but couldn’t stop a two-player rush and L.A. Pierce took advantage to post a 1-0 women’s soccer victory at La Playa Stadium.
Jennifer Alvarez scored on a rebound in the 75th minute, handing the Vaqueros just their second loss in their last 23 home games (16-2-5). It was the first goal allowed in three games by SBCC (2-1).
The Brahmas (3-0) have outscored their opponents 9-0 this year.
Maiwald had 10 saves, including a penalty kick by Ani Eishoei in the 17th minute.
“Meghan was tremendous,” said SBCC coach John Sisterson. “We just got a call this afternoon from the coach at the University of Southern California and he’s very interested in her.”
Courtney Belsheim had a shot carom off the right goalpost in the 23rd minute and Kelly Deckers had a 1-on-1 chance with the goalie along the right side in the 85th minute but her shot was smothered.
“Maybe we could have finished our opportunities a little bit better but they’re not machines. They’re human and sometimes they make errors,” stated Sisterson. “We’ll work on finishing tomorrow and the day after and then look forward to playing at L.A. Harbor.”
The Vaqueros will travel to Wilmington for a 6:30 p.m. game on Friday at L.A. Harbor before returning home on Sept. 15 to take on Santa Monica at 7 p.m.
