UCSB’s Julian deRubira and Scott Smith finished one-two in the men’s portion of the Lagoon Open on Saturday morning, but the Gauchos were edged in the dual meet by Big West-favorite Cal Poly, 27-30. The Mustang women also won in narrow fashion, 27-28.
In earning his second-place finish, Smith ran a solid 24:39 in the season-opening meet for both teams. Cal Poly’s runners finished third, fourth, fifth, and sixth to key the victory. Joe Gatel was the top Mustang finisher clocking a 24:43 to finish third.
Other top UCSB runners included Juan Paredes who ran a 25:09 to finish seventh, andWaleed Totari who ran 25:15 to finish eighth.
On the women’s side, Cal Poly’s Kayleigh Tyerman won the race in a time of 17:38, narrowly edging Gaucho Amanda Moreno who ran 17:39. Santa Barbara’s Bree Stenkowski finished third at 17:51, while Cal Poly runners finished fourth and fifth. Katie Voigtlander was sixth for the Gauchos at 18:11, Ashley Beechan was eighth at 18:30, and Crystal Reed ran 18:36 to finish ninth.
Both UCSB teams will now take two weeks off before returning the action on Saturday, Sept. 19 when they travel to the UC Riverside Invitational. The first race will begin at 8:15 a.m.
