Brendan Kerwin-McElroy exploded for nine goals on Saturday as the ninth-ranked Santa Barbara High boys water polo team defeated No. 10 Esperanza on the road 13-12.
Coach Mark Walsh said that the senior’s goal tally ties for the most in a single game by a Don since 1993, his first year with the team. Tyler Wilson also scored nine goals in a game back in 2004.
Santa Barbara (2-2) led 8-7 at the half but fell behind 10-9 after the third. Kerwin-McElroy scored the Dons’ final three goals in the fourth quarter, then joined with Nick Johnson on back-to-back field blocks to prevent Esperanza from tying it up.
Kenny Myers drew six ejections in the game and Enzo Wolfe tallied a pair of goals. Walsh said that Kerwin-McElroy’s scoring has gone up this year due to the graduation of other starts from last year.
“He’s getting a lot of opportunities. He’s been a pass-first guy the past couple of years to facilitate some of the older guys,” said Walsh.
Wow! Congratulations Brendan! We wish we could have been there to see that – Amazing! Keep it up! Go Dons!
