Jewett finds net for first time in 3-0 Warrior win

Westmont women’s soccer (2-2-1) picked up a non-conference win on Wednesday in a 3-0 victory over the Panthers of Chapman University (6-2). Freshman forward Brittany Jewett scored the first goal of her collegiate career with just over two minutes remaining in the opening frame to give the Warriors a 1-0 halftime advantage.

Seven and one-half minutes into the second half, senior defender Britney Scannell, a transfer from UCLA, stretched the Warrior lead to 2-0 with an unassisted goal – her first goal in a Warrior uniform.

“We had a couple of different goal scorers tonight which obviously feels good and gives us a little bit of variety,” noted Westmont head coach Dave Wolf. “It was a pretty solid road performance. The main thing that sticks out is that we played pretty well in the final third of the field tonight. We’ve played well in two-thirds of the field so far this season, but we were better in the final third and created a number of good (scoring) chances and enough goals to win the game.”

Westmont’s final goal came off a familiar foot. Freshman forward Aolani Rueff – who before tonight was the Warriors’ only goal scorer the season – recorded her fifth goal of the year. Assisted by senior midfielder Jessica Zuehlsdorf, Rueff scored with just over four minutes remaining in the game.

The Warriors controlled the flow of the game, taking 24 shots compared to 10 by the Panthers. Eleven of the Warriors’ shots were on frame.

Roxanne Love, Westmont’s junior goalkeeper, produced two saves in the shutout, her first of the year.

The game marked the end of Westmont’s non-conference season. On Saturday, the Warriors will open Golden State Athletic Conference play by hosting California Baptist, the NAIA’s top-ranked team.  The game will be played at 4:30 p.m. at Santa Barbara City College’s La Playa Stadium and will be followed by a men’s soccer game between the same schools.
