Three UCSB baseball players were recently tabbed as some of the nation’s best prospects after enjoying sterling summers in their respective summer leagues. All three are expected to have an immediate impact on the 2010 Gaucho squad.
The highest-ranked of the trio, according to the college baseball website Perfect Game Crosschecker, was outfielder Mark Haddow. With the Jayhawk League’s Derby Twins, Haddow hit .309 with five home runs, six doubles and 50 total bases. He also stole seven bases and scored 20 runs. He was ranked the No. 2 prospect coming out of the Jayhawk League.
Kevin Gelinas, already listed by Baseball America as the No. 1 prospect to come from the Conejo Oaks of the California Collegiate League, was tabbed as the eighth-best prospect according to Perfect Game’s site. Gelinas, who transferred to UCSB from Central Arizona Junior College, went 2-2 with a 1.96 ERA in 16 games (including four starts).
Mario Hollands, who dominated in the uber-competitive Cape Cod League with a 4-1 record and a 2.12 ERA for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox, was rated No. 55 best prospect coming out of the Cape. Hollands, the Gauchos’ Saturday starter in 2009, went 6-6 with a 4.74 ERA last season.
